Ace Hood f/ Beanie Sigel, Busta Rhymes, Pusha T & Styles P - “Go N Get It (Remix)” (Def Jam, 2011)
So Def Jam in their infinite mercy dropped an Ace Hood album the same week that they were putting out that other little rap album they put out. Now we joke about Ace around here you kind of have to feel bad for dude in this particular scenario. But that’s all I’m going to say about that because I don’t actually feel anything ever.
Instead I wanted to talk about this posse cut remix to his non-hit single “Go N Get It” and its very 2001 lineup. First of all - is it weird that Ace Hood went and made one of these big Khaledesque posse cuts without even a single southern rap guest? (Unless you want to play the Virginia is the south card, which I wouldn’t argue with in a societal context, but is certainly up for debate in a hip hop one, Lex Luger aside.)
But beyond that, nobody but Busta (who is a vampire) sounds like themselves on this song. I was pretty psyched by the prospect of hearing Beanie Sigel on a Lex Luger record, hoping he was going to do his whole hungry man style and instead he’s just kind of wheezing. The toothpick through the goldfish imagery is classic Beans, though. Pusha changes up his flow for the first time in about a decade (points for the Super Dave name drop, I guess) and Styles once again sounds like he’s trying too hard to squeeze into Luger’s aesthetic. If it wasn’t for their names showing up on the back of an actual CD (presuming they actually did a physical release on Ace Hood’s album) I’d suspect we were victim to another bizarre hoax much like this Raphael Saadiq record that had everyone including E-40 fooled. When I first heard that record I just sort of resignedly assumed that Short and 40 were sounding old and uncomfortable. That’s probably what’s actually happening on this Ace Hood song. And yet it’s oddly enjoyable…
