Curren$y f/ Mos Def & Jay Electronica “The Day” (Blu Roc, 2010)
Stung by his own buzz, this was the year that Jay finally lost that momentum where everything he did was an event record. Between his weird Biggie tribute and that bad insomnia anthem from the soundtrack to the Vice guy’s movie about Netflix it seems like Jay stopped mattering. He also got outshined (I’m told) by J. Cole. Oof. “The Day” recovers that inital relevance, toeing the divide between conscious rapper and conflicted swagged out elegance. (SAH has the lyrics for you.) It almost seems like a mistake to throw him on this record as it couldn’t be more apparant that Curren$y is a good rapper but Jay is a great rapper. Everything else about this record pretty much sucks, half baked and under polished like one would expect from something that Mos Def attached his name to. This doesn’t bode well for the Curren$y album or Dame’s Roc-A-Fella reboot but whatever - Jay Elect Ramadaan Muhammad Asalaamica Rasoul Allah Supana Watallah through your monitor!
I’m half drunk and it’s late, so forgive me if I’m dramatically misreading this joint.
