Anonymous asked: you included that Macklemore "Thrift Shop" song on your best of rap singles 2012 list, but I think that's all you've said about it. What are your thoughts on that song?
Well to be clear I usually reserve the #50 slot on that list for a popular or significant record that I don’t personally love. Last year it was “Gucci, Gucci” so it seemed like there’d be some nice symmetry in once again throwing a white rap song about thrifting in there. I never expected “Thrift Shop” would get as big as it has, nor did I think anyone would care.
That being said, while I’m not particularly keen on the record myself, I’m equally baffled by the negative response it’s been met with in critical circles. Musically it’s like the most innocuous rap hit in a long ass time and imo it’s pretty positive as far as values go. Overpriced middlebrow brand oriented fashion fetishism has plagued the hip hop community for basically as long as the hip hop community has existed and I’m definitely not going to get mad at a rapper who is actively combating that.
I’m too large of a human to buy clothes at thrift shops with any regularity - usually the only things I can ever find in my size are all stretched neck fat man bullshit - but if that weren’t the case I would definitely buy most of my clothes at thrift shops.
Also it’s got a good beat and I can dance to it.
