Young Sam - “King Of Jerk” (Internet, 2011)
If the assorted internet accounts of teens that I creepily peer into are to be believed, then Sam is by far the most popular rapper on the jerkin’ circuit. He’s rapping pretty well on this, even if his style is completely derivative of old-Wayne. I definitely appreciate the sentiment - “jerkin’ ain’t dead, we just tryna make changes” - though it would be nice if it didn’t, you know, sound like every other jerkin’ record of the past two years. I’ve been thinking about the unexpected longevity of this stuff a lot lately and wondering if it will eventually morph into a permanently regional dance trend, the LA equivalent of, say, New Orleans Bounce or Baltimore Club. Or maybe it has already.
