Tyler The Creator’s “Yonkers” and “Sandwitches” are on Itunes today.
Tyler to XL Recordings for a one album deal is official. This feels like the right move. A large indie will give Tyler the creative control he needs while still putting his album in big box stores. The short term contract won’t completely rule out the possibility of him/them eventually landing somewhere in the rap/major label sphere or alternately striking out on their own and formalizing an OFWGKTA imprint later down the line. “Yonkers” clearly wasn’t made with the intention of getting on any radio playlists and XL has a strong track record of translating cult followings and critical buzz into actual record sales (Vampire Weekend). Obviously listeners (and hipster types especially) engage in rap differently than they do indie rock and spending habits reflect that, so it’ll be interesting to see how Goblin fares. 400k Youtube views in three days certainly a promising number, even if you do curve downward to account for rubbernecking. (According to YT’s handy drop down stats window most of that traffic is coming from Facebook shares and not blogs.)
I’m mostly just looking forward to a nice 2xLP pressing.
